On Saturday August 6th 2011 at 10:30am local time in locations across the USA, nursing mothers will gather to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week and try to break the record for the most women breastfeeding simultaneously! This event is called The Big Latch On – and we we will hosting a location for the greater Pittsburgh area.
The Big Latch On originated in New Zealand in 2005. Since then, locations around the world have held Latch On events. The largest single location of nursing mothers was in the Philippines in 2006 where 3,738 mothers got together to simultaneously nurse their babies and in 2010, 9,826 nursing mothers were recorded at 325 sites in 16 countries. This years event is going to try to break this record for simultaneous breastfeeding mothers at locations around the globe! At precisely 10:30 AM (local time), all mothers will latch their babies on and nurse for 1 full minute. Witnesses will count the number of mothers who are nursing for the full minute. The numbers will then be sent to La Leche League International for the final tally to see if the record can be broken. All proceeds and donations from the event go to support La Leche League International.
What Do You Need To Do:
Find a location near you. Then show up and nurse your baby!
If you are in the greater Pittsburgh area or vicinity, we would love to have you join us. Our event will begin at 9:30 AM on Saturday, August 6, 2011. All nursing mothers are asked to arrive by 10 AM in order to register. And the nursing will begin at 10:30 AM.
Fun, Food and Prizes! And to make the event even more exciting, we will have LOTS (and I mean LOTS) of prizes to give away, great food and great camaraderie. We will have Lactation Consultants, Childbirth Educators, Baby Photographers and Doulas on site to answer any questions that you may have about your baby or baby-to-be. All moms and moms-to-be (and their families) are welcome to attend. While only nursing moms can participate in the latch on, everyone can partake in the fun!!

I’m sorry I’m not close enough to join you there…
Mississippi is at the bottom of the breastfeeding food chain, it seems. There are NO events listed in the entire state. *sigh*
Hi Tiffany, I wish you were closer too!! Don’t worry – I registered my event and it hasn’t shown up on their site yet, so I think they are a little behind in getting them posted…hopefully one will show up closer to you too! — Judy
Hey Judy,
I’ll be there for sure. This sounds so awesome.
Judy, I’ll likely be there! If I tandem nurse my almost 3yo and my yet to be born 1month old, do I count twice? 😉
We will definitely try to be there! Let me know if you’d like Green Cheeks to donate anything for the prizes, we’d be happy to
I’d love to join Judy, this sounds great.
Hi Judy, I would love for green cheeks to donate to the prizes – thank you!!
Hi Sara , unfortunately the only count numbers of moms nursing not numbers of babies – so you will only count once – but we’d love to have you tandem nurse!! –Judy
Hey Judy,
I’d be happy to donate something too.
[…] are so excited to be hosting a local event for The Big Latch On!! This post will be updated from now until the event happens – so please bookmark it and stay […]
Hey Judy!
I would love to attend. I have yet to venture out of the house with our little one alone but there is always a first time for everything
Hi Libby, I would love for you to attend!! And I can’t wait to see you and your little one!! — Judy
I would love to come, but my baby may or may not be nursing at that point. Are there rules for how long the baby must nurse for it to count?
Hi Christine, in order for the nursing to count, the baby has to nurse for one full minute, from 10:30 until 10:31 AM. If your baby doesn’t nurse, it’s OK – you won’t count toward the world record, but you will still be able to participate in all of the give-aways. So please come!
I am a new mom and plan to attend with my son. Looking forward to participating!
Congrats on your new baby Chrissy! We look forward to meeting you on the 6th!! — Judy
I will be there!
A group of us will be coming from Erie! Hopefully I will not be called to a birth…otherwise I plan on being there!
Excellent news Justine! I am looking forward to meeting all of you! — Judy
We are hoping to bring a group of 5-10 for the event from Erie, PA
