How Do I Know What Size Nursing Bra To Get?

I am currently pregnant and would like to purchase some nursing bras. My current bras don’t fit me well anymore, but I still have 6 weeks before my baby arrives. What size nursing bra should I purchase?

You should always purchase a bra that is going to fit you now. If your current bras aren’t fitting, then it is time to get a new one. If you don’t know what size you are, then you should get measured or measure yourself to find out what size you should be wearing now. Many women will go up one full cup size after the baby arrives and their milk comes in. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict exactly how much your breasts will change size once the baby arrives. What I generally recommend is that moms get a bra that is comfortable now, but will give them “room to grow” for after the baby arrives. There are two bras that are really great for this:

bodysilkseamless nursing bra1) The Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra: This bra doesn’t have specific cup sizes but instead is sized S, M, L, XL. It is designed to stretch to accommodate your changing body. So even if your breasts go up one or more cup sizes, this bra will still fit you. It will also continue to fit you after your milk comes in and your breasts change size in the AM vs the PM or during the first few months post-partum vs when your baby is approaching his/her first birthday and not nursing as much anymore. In addition to this “stretch-a-bility” I also love this bra because it gives FANTASTIC support. It has “ribbing” that goes under the bust and up the side of each breast which gives the same support/lift/separation you would get with an underwire – without an underwire! It also has removable padding – so if you don’t like it, you can take it out. And – it fits cup sizes B-DDD(F) – so will accommodate almost everyone!!

Melinda G Tee-Shirt Underwire Nursing Bra2) The Tee-Shirt Underwire Nursing Bra: This bra is great too – especially for those of you who like underwires. This bra has a padded underwire so that it fits gently under your breasts and gives fabulous support without digging into you. It also has three nursing clips – allowing you to make the cup up to one full cup-size larger to accommodate your changing breasts. This bra is so comfortable that my MOM is wearing it – and she isn’t even nursing!! It is by far the most comfortable underwire bra that I have ever worn. It comes in sizes 34-42 C-DDD(F) and will accommodate up to a G cup easily! The only downside to this bra is that it doesn’t have any padding in the cups.

If you choose one of these two bras while you are pregnant, then you will have a good start for when your baby arrives. Once the baby is born and you know exactly what size you are going to be, you can come back and try the plethora of other nursing bras that are available!

What was your favorite nursing bra? Did you purchase it before the baby was born or after? Please leave a comment and share your experiences with our readers!

  • i love that you put this advice out there for pregnant women and new moms to help them to figure out what the right fit will be/ is for them, and that you carry bras that have a little more leeway for the sizing than others, cuz lets face it, nursing bras tend to be a touch rigid. i don’t know how many times i get painful red marks from wearing a too tight nursing bra, or not enough support from a slightly too big one, but since that covers two out of three of my nursing bras, it’s pretty often. the third is stretchy and for sleeping, and while its about as supportive as a tissue, it will hold a nursing pad in place so i don’t wake up swimming in milk!
