Follow Up To Our SIDS Post

SIDS is one of those topics that doctors don’t touch while expecting and new moms are in the room, and sadly new moms have no clue! Many are calling for reeducation on SIDS and for the confusion of information to be sorted.

Some say that pacifiers reduce SIDS, while others say pacifiers confuse new-to-breastfeeding babies. Scientists all over the world have been trying to find out why our little babies struggle in the early months. What can we do to protect them?

Educate the parents! I’ve found in my years that new parents are confused, scared, worried, and just overall stressed. Not sure what to do for this cry, or if this other cry means he’s hungry. In talking with a few new parents many of them said that their lamaze classes were just that – techniques for having the baby. What about classes for after the baby is here? What ever happened to the newborn baby dolls and lessons on washing, proper burping techniques, or even just how to hold the baby?

Does your doctor and hospital have these sort of classes? Did you take them or did you not even know until after the fact that they existed?

  • Judy, We took an infant care and feeding course that covered infant bathing, swaddling, breastfeeding, and CPR. I think it mentioned the “back to sleep” campaign but not much else. It was offered through my hospitals educational enrichment and taught by the nurses that teach child birth.

However, the “real” SIDS education I recieved was seperate. It was through a prenatal education course I took to qualify for reduced prenatal healthcare.

Next week I’ll ask around about the current medical standards for education/ reeducation. And if you are interested I’ll email you.
