Breastfeeding Activites

What do you do when you are breastfeeding? How do you pass the time? Is it different what you did with your first baby vs when you have multiple children to care for?

When my son was little there are a number of things that I used to do while breastfeeding – to help pass the time and make me feel like I was being productive (as if being the sole source of nutrition for a human being isn’t enough productivity!). Here is a short list – please leave a comment on this post to share your tips for staying busy while breastfeeding!

Type on the computer – whether you are sending emails for work, catching up with friends on facebook or getting the best holiday deals – surfing the web while breastfeeding is a great way to pass the time

Read a great book – I always found it easier to read a book that was small in size and light weight – since most of the time I had to hold it with one hand – but reading while your little one nurses is a great way to get some me-time long with your baby-time!

Get some rest – once you have mastered the art of breastfeeding while lying down – you may never want to do it any other way! You can your baby can get some great snuggle time in while nursing – and who knows – you might even get to take a nap too!

Watch a movie – especially when your little one is really little – watching a movie or getting caught up on your favorite TV programs is a great way to pass the time while breastfeeding!

Go shopping – who ever said you needed to be sitting down to breastfeed? Put on your favorite sling and nursing top and head off to the mall – your little one with get lots of good “nummies” while you do your Holiday Shopping!

I do all of the above… plus visiting with family and friends.

Oh, and talking on the phone. I’ve even taken conference calls while nursing, in a pinch.

  • Catching up on phone calls, tv, and emails were all usual activities when I was nursing. And while I never shopped at a store while nursing, I frequently shopped online :)

My main issue, however, was trying to figure out what to do when I was pumping at work…while holding the two bottles, I never quite managed to do anything else!

  • Thanks for your comment @(Mostly) Healthy Mom! Having a hands-free pumping device for use at work was a LIFE-SAVER for me! I was able to talk on the phone, participate in conference calls, type email and do just about anything that didn’t require face-to-face contact – all while pumping milk for my little one!! — Judy

  • My baby never let me do anything while breastfeeding after the first couple months. If I tried to read a book, he would twist his head around (pulling my nipple with him) to look at it and try to push the book away. If I turned on a movie or tv, he got distracted and would get fussy. Sometimes I could sneak an open magazine onto a table next to the couch. It was frustrating, but I figured he wanted 100% of Mommy’s attention!

  • I have done TONS of things while nursing thanks to baby carriers. walking, sewing, shopping, crafting, blogging…you name it.

    I’m nursing right now. :)

  • With our daughter, I wore her all the time and have taken walks, bought a cell phone, designed a website, cooked dinner while nursing her. She nursed for over 3 yrs. Currently, I am still nursing our twin 2-yr-old sons, and funnily enough, they nurse in tandem 95% of the time….which limits my while-nursing-activities to daydreaming, planning a menu, talking on the phone or dozing off with them. If I could wear them around as I did our daughter, I would definitely be Christmas-shopping with them while nursing! But at 30+ lbs each… I’m happy to go off to la-la-land while tandem breastfeeding :).
